Blackstone Canal

The Blackstone River is held back by a masonry dam, called the Rolling Dam" just above the Blackstone Gorge on the state line. The present masonry dam was preceded by an earlier wooden canal era dam that  is submerged just upstream of the present dam. These dams backed water upstream to the Millville Lock and diverted water through the present Factory Pond to the three Blackstone Locks and the present hydro electric station. On July 18 & 19, repair work to the Rolling Dam resulted in the lowering of the pool by about ten feet exposing the earlier dam.
